CIA Hungry for Spy Recruits, Pursuing ‘LGBT’ Communities
by Ali Papademetriou
The United States Central Intelligence Agency is expanding its recruits further than ever before. According to NPR as, “part of the CIA’s efforts to diversify its workforce, the spy agency is reaching out to a group that once was unable to get security clearance — lesbians and gay men.”
Last month, the CIA collaborated with the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber off Commerce by means of recruiting homosexuals within the community who might be interested in joining the agency. Michael Barber, manager of the CIA’s “LGBT” (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual) Community Outreach program, commented on the recruitment, “This is the first time we’ve done a networking event of this type with any of the gay and lesbian chamber of commerces in the United States.”
On its website, the CIA advertised its contribution to a professional conference that was held last month and accommodated for homosexuals attracted to careers in math in science. The website expressed, “For the first time in its history, the CIA served as a corporate sponsor of the oSTEM – Out in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – recent national conference in Chicago, and led discussions in the Intelligence Careers conference track. The CIA participated in the event as part of its nationwide outreach to diverse communities with mission critical talent.”
According to the website, oSTEM is a “national society that promotes leadership opportunities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and allies (LGBTQA) communities in the STEM fields.”
Susan Gordon, the CIA’s director of support was a speaker at numerous conferences, as was explained on the website. “Sexual orientation and gender identity have absolutely no relation to one’s ability to do the job. When you blend LGBT and STEM, you get innovation, different perspectives, connections between complex ideas, and applications that drive bottom-line business results.”
Clearly, the CIA is adamant about the importance of allowing individuals of all sexual preferences to be part of the agency, as this could be a factor in its starvation for more workers to spy on United States citizens as well as those overseas. The culture of LGBT acceptance is nonetheless a good thing for society, but when government gets involved, it becomes nothing more than a statist ploy to gain more control over the people. How Orwellian is recruiting individuals to spy on other United States citizens? As if that’s not enough in itself, a politically correct community is being targeted to add onto the surveillance state under the guise of promoting all-around acceptance in the workplace.
This is not the only community that has been pursued by the CIA. In 2009, the CIA branched out and made a strong presence in the city of Dearborn, Michigan, the largest Arab population in the country and hoped to recruit Arab-Americans that could potentially be employed as spies overseas. Arabic Dearborn residents were even exposed to television ads and newspapers that were pushed by the agency. Interestingly, the people had a hard time giving in to the employment opportunity, as many found it difficult and immoral to join while the U.S. had and still has proven to have nothing less than an interventionist foreign policy especially in the Middle East, which has only created domestic fear over the stereotype of Arabic “terrorists”.
“People have been told, ‘your name is Mohammed; your name is Ahmed; you must be a terrorist. How do you bring people into the government when they have been subjected to a great deal of discrimination?” noted Osama Siblani, who was a Lebanese publisher for the Dearborn-based Arab American News.
Siblani commented, “You have to believe that what you are doing is the right thing, otherwise you are just a gun for hire.” In September of 2009, Mr. Siblani met with Leon Panetta, CIA Director, when Siblani told him, “Treat us like Americans. We love America but does America love us?” Alluding to the stereotype the U.S. government has instilled in the minds of many precautious Americans.
It seems as though the CIA has taken the route of directing their recruits to communities that are looking to be further accepted into society in places like the workforce, rather than to those that are angry with the government.
