A video was posted this week of President Assad’s shabiha soldiers taken prisoner by rebel forces, while in captivity they are treated with humiliation techniques. Forced to shave half of their mustaches off and praise the Free Syrian Army, clearly going against the will of Assad’s captive individuals.

Since the uprising began sixteen months ago there have been multiple videos of humiliation recorded on either side of battle. All of this happening as Iraq’s foreign minister released statements this week explaining that information has been gathered showing al-Qaeda “operational officers” are moving in-and-out of Syria. “We have solid information and intelligence that members of al-Qaeda terrorist networks have gone in the other direction, to Syria, to help, to liaise, to carry out terrorist attacks,” Zebari told reporters during a news conference.

Despite little coverage by media sources, the New York Times reported in June that CIA operatives had been distributing weapons on the Turkish border; giving direction as to who was funding the violence. Although the United States may not be fully to blame, the country has played a key role in giving rebels the upper hand during battle. According to reports, Syrian rebels have received anything from anti-tank weapons to surface-to-air missiles; all funded by the US.
